Well…this get asked a lot!
And for the most part…….its much simpler than what you think or what you see posted on the page quite often!
Many of our competitors at NWPR shoot through the region and nationally. They have a large amount of gear all specific to certain aspects of the game.
Many of our other competitors shoot locally and do not have a need for a large amount of gear.
Both are welcome and encouraged to come and shoot!
Things you NEED to have for a match at NWPR:
A bolt action or semi automatic rifle chambered in 22lr that utilizes a detachable magazine. 2 10 round magazines is encouraged (and needed for some stages). A scope that either clicks up and down or has some kind of reticle that allows the shooter to shoot past the zero range. Most often we zero (center the gun in) at 50 yards.
Ammo! Our matches are typically around 65-85 rounds total. Competitors should always bring extra for zeroing the rifle, warming up and checking “data” at longer ranges.
A shooting bag! Shooting bags used for this style of shooting usually feel like a sock filled with sand. This allows the bags to conform to the prop they are laid on and give the shooter a stable platform from which to shoot.
Things that can be useful but not a MUST!
The ability to attach a bipod to the rifle. Some stages are shot prone. Some shooters will use a bipod to do this some utilize their shooting bag.
Binoculars! Binos help shooters find the targets so you can make a plan prior to your turn. Knowing where the targets are and which one to shoot is quite improtant.
A tripod for the binos. Tripods are used my most shooters at larger matches for holding binos, weather meters, spotting scopes and other accessories.
A ballistics solver. There are many phone apps that will give you accurate data for shooting past the 50 yards zero. Kestrel wind/ballsitic meters also give environmental data at the same time.
That’s it! NWPR has loaner gear available for shooters who want to try this out but might not have all the gear they need or none of the gear they need. This community of people is very friendly and will lend gear as needed to help new shooters get in the game so to speak!
Below is a picture of a Tikka T1x setup ready to go with a few accessories such as a bipod and an ARCA rail on the forend. The ARCA rail allows for quick and easy attachment of accessories such as a bipod.
