Bags…..Bags……..BAGS!!!!
So what kind of shooting bag do you need?!?
All of them right?!
Shooting bags are as personal preference as shoes are to most of us. It’s possible to use just one bag for everything…..BUT……since there are no restrictions on the number of bags a shooter can choose to use…….why not have a few that you can pick from.
We use a shooting bag on every stage. Sometimes it will be placed on the prop to allow us to build a stable position on top some part of the prop or at times they are used for rear support while shooting prone.
Pump pillows…..a large pillow/bag contraption, are used when a shooter needs rear support for the rifle when shooting from angled positions or to raise the shooters torso up when shooting from a high prone position. Pump pillows can be used while kneeling as well.
Some shooters utilize a bag attached to an ARCA rail that attaches directly to the rifle. This is handy if you need to move fast or want to use a rear tripod as a support tool while the front of the rifle is on the prop.
Things you need to look for when you are picking a shooting bag for NRL22/PRS/PRO style shooting would be:
Size. Most of the bags in the market today are available in varying sizes. Larger bags provide more surface area and can provide more support than a similar shaped small bag. Small bags are easier to manage and can fit into tighter spots.
Fill. The stuff inside can greatly impact how stable your position is. Heavy sand may provide a very stable position but is heavy and can get hard to deal with if it’s raining. Spec-Lite fill is very light but, may not conform to the prop as well as sand thus proving to be less stable in some cases. Shooters need to experiment with this to find the right fit. Don’t be afraid to ask to try a bag at a match. I’ve never met anyone that won’t jump at the chance to borrow a shooting bag to a new shooter.
Shape. Shooting bags come in a variety of shapes. The bags shape can determine how well it lays over a thick or thin part of a barricade. Most bags utilize some kind of curved underside and a flat top so the shooter can build as stable of position as possible
So what bag do you get?! Try them out at a match. If you want to show up with your own here a few that will do most everything you need them to do.
