NRL22, or National Rifle League .22, is a nationwide precision rimfire shooting series that uses .22 LR rifles to replicate the style of long-range PRS competition at much shorter distances. Matches typically take place between 25 and 100 yards and involve timed stages where shooters engage steel targets from various positions using barricades and props. Because .22 LR ammunition and equipment is less expensive, NRL22 is highly accessible to beginners while still offering valuable practice and competitive settings for experienced precision shooters. Monthly courses of fire are standardized across all participating clubs, and the sport features multiple divisions—including youth categories—making it a popular and community-driven way to develop strong precision rifle fundamentals.

To compete in an NRL22 event, shooters typically need a .22 LR rifle capable of consistent accuracy with a detachable magazine capable of holding at least 10 rounds, along with a quality optic that provides reliable tracking and enough magnification—usually in the 10–20× range—for engaging small steel targets at 25 to 100 yards. Match-grade .22 LR ammunition is important for consistency, and most competitors use adjustable bipods for stability in prone positions. A rear shooting bag and a versatile support bag—such as a “Game Changer”–style barricade bag—are also widely used for positional stages. While not required, many shooters add accessories like scope levels, data card holders, and slings to help manage stages efficiently. A DOPE card or ballistic solver is helpful for quickly referencing holds. Though you can start with minimal equipment, these items form the basic gear setup most competitors bring to an NRL22 match.
A Tikka T1x with a Vortex scope is a great setup for NRL22. Included in this setup is an Area 419 ARCA rial attached to the stock forend, an MDT bipod and several types of match grade .22lr ammo.

3. Do I need an expensive scope?
No. A scope with clear glass, reliable tracking, and around 10–20× magnification is ideal—but not necessarily expensive. Consistency matters more than brand.
4. What classes or divisions are available?
NRL22 includes divisions such as Base, Open, Ladies, Young Guns, and Old Guns. Base Division limits total rifle + optic MSRP to encourage budget setups.
5. Is NRL22 beginner-friendly?
Yes—NRL22 is designed to be extremely accessible. Most clubs welcome new shooters, and experienced shooters often help newcomers with gear and fundamentals.
6. What kind of ammunition works best?
